Gut-Loving Bone Broth
“Healing your gut” can feel like a never ending checklist sometimes (which is why working with a practitioner is key to making fast, sustainable progress without the overwhelm… but I digress). When I was first healing my leaky gut, a condition that is driven by stress and toxins. “Leaky gut”, or intestinal hyper-permeability, occurs when the tight junctions in our gut wall loosen, allowing more than just nutrients to escape our digestive tract. This drives a long-term inflammatory response which can leave us feeling exhausted, sick, and achy.
One of the most nutrient-rich healing foods I used on my own gut health journey was bone broth! While it can be expensive (an not the highest quality) when bought in stores, making it at home is easy and even more delicious. This recipe uses ingredients to heighten flavor and draw out all that amazing glycine, gelatin, and collagen your body will love!
INGREDIENTS:
4 lbs beef or chicken bones (you can ask your local butcher for these or use packages labeled “soup bones”)
3 carrots, halved
3-4 stalks of celery, halved
1/2 white or red onion, quartered
1 Tbs himalayan sea salt
1 Tbl black peppercorns
2-3 whole garlic cloves
Additional desired herbs
INSTRUCTIONS:
Place all ingredients into a stockpot (or largest pot you have) and cover completely with filtered water. If your bones are frozen this is also fine.
Cook on the stovetop at medium-low heat for 10-12 hours. I tend to leave mine overnight. This process needs to be low and slow to extract all the nutrients from the bones!
Allow to cool and strain into container of choice (large mason jars or a bowl). Discard all the cooked veggies and bones. Place the broth in the fridge. It is not ready to consume yet, as the fat still needs to be skimmed!
Once a solid white layer of fat has formed over the broth, use a knife or spoon to remove the fat and place in the trash.
To enjoy, heat up and drink as is or add ginger and lime juice! Broth is good for up to 7 days.
