Holiday Hot Cocoa

Even as I’m typing this from sunny, sweaty Mexico, I can’t wait to get home to where it’s officially hot cocoa season. Drinking hot chocolate and curling up to watch a movie was a childhood favorite, and as I get older I still crave it. But instead of a packet of chemical-filled hot chocolate powder with wimpy marshmallows, I’ve tweaked my hot cocoa ritual a bit. This version features rich full-fat coconut milk, natural sweeteners, and immune-boosting anti-inflammatory spices. And let me tell you- it hits the spot! Pair it with some homemade marshmallows and a movie marathon for maximum enjoyment. 🎄

Hot Cocoa (serves 2)

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup almond or coconut milk, unsweetened and full-fat

  • 1 cup filtered water

  • 2 Tbsp raw cacao powder

  • 1 tsp ceylon cinnamon

  • ½ tsp ground ginger

  • ½ tsp ground turmeric

  • pinch nutmeg

  • pinch celtic sea salt

  • dash of freshly ground black pepper

  • stevia, maple syrup or honey as desired

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a medium saucepan gently heat up the nut milk, water, spices and the salt and pepper.

  2. Stir on a medium heat for 5 minutes. Add the raw cacao powder and stir through until the flavours are combined. (I use a handheld frother to incorporate all the cacao powder).

  3. Add desired sweetener to taste and enjoy!
